Quinta da Lixa has already exported 800,000 euros to the US this year and expects to end 2018 with a year-on-year growth of more than 12% in that market, which dethroned Germany as the main international destination of the wine producer.
According to the administrator of Quinta da Lixa, Óscar Meireles, the United States has been the main export market of the company since “four or five years”, presenting “enormous growth potential”.
Quinta da Lixa exports to the US have been improving favorably in recent years, and if in 2015 they totaled 620 thousand euros, in 2016 they increased to 700 thousand euros and in 2017 they reached 750 thousand euros.
In the ranking of the main international destinations of young wines of Quinta da Lixa, located in the county of Felgueiras, followed by Germany (later came to lead, but surpassed by the USA), followed then by the Netherlands, Russia, the United Kingdom and Brazil.
Along with the US, Russia and Japan are also referred to by the company as “high potential” destinations, although the latter two are “more time consuming to create business” and “not always very responsive.”
With an annual production of 4.2 million bottles, Quinta da Lixa increased its sales by 10% in 2017, totaling 6,625 million euros, largely due to the dynamism of non-EU external markets, which increased by 51.55% .
Sales to the domestic market, which accounted for more than half of the turnover, rose by almost 6%, totaling 3,761 million euros, as well as sales to the intra-EU market, which increased by 7.42%, totaling around two million of euros.
Currently the winemaker channels 52% of the sales to 34 foreign markets, having in 2017 increased the profit by 140% in year-on-year terms, totaling 708 thousand euros.
After investing more than six million euros in new properties to increase the winery capacity, in a new bottling line with a capacity of nine thousand bottles/hour and in the first wine hotel of Vinho Verde region (the Monverde – Wine Experience Hotel), Quinta da Lixa is undergoing a new investment of 1.2 million euros in 2018 and 2019, mainly aimed at increasing the area of own vineyard.
Initially a small business of the Meireles family, which owned several vineyards around the small village of Lixa, Quinta da Lixa – Sociedade Agrícola was established in 1986 and today has an annual production of around 4.2 million bottles.
