The prestigious “Mondial du Fromage” International Cheese Competition, featuring cheeses of the most diverse nationalities, and one of the three most prestigious contests in Europe, distinguished for the first time a Serra da Estrela PDO Cheese.
At the event, Vale da Estrela Cheese factory was recognized for its Serra da Estrela PDO Aged Cheese, a product with certification of “Protected Designation of Origin” for meeting the most demanding quality levels, having as relevant aspect the fact that this cheese goes through a maturing process for 4 months. According to Jorge Coelho, Project Administrator and Promoter, “this award represents the achievement of an ambition of Vale da Estrela Cheese Factory, which is to raise the quality of a product such as Serra da Estrela PDO Cheese to Excellence, an ambition that is part of its culture.
As we live this high moment, Vale da Estrela Cheese factory shares this award with COAPE and dedicates it to the 40 sheperds and to our extraordinary cheese factories, because only with their hard work and dedication was possible to reach it”. Jorge Coelho, originally from the municipality of Mangualde, is the sponsor who sought to recover the family tradition in the production and marketing of a characteristic product from the region of Serra da Estrela in which Mangualde belongs.
