The event took place at Expomor 2019 in Montemor-o-Novo on the day that marked the ‘Dia do Porco Alentejano’ (‘Alentejo Pig Day’).
During the celebrations, the Associação Nacional de Criadores de Porco Alentejano (National Association of Alentejo Pig Breeders) – the event’s organizing entity – developed some activities related to the Alentejo pork, highlighting the 11th edition of the competition, with SEL – Salsicharia Estremocense getting first place and the consequent Gold Medal with a Varanegra Ham.
Varanegra already had nine gold medals – three of them international – since the beginning of its production in 2016.
“The freedom in which the Alentejo pig is raised, feeding mainly on acorn, herbs and all that the countryside has to offer provides a raw material with special characteristics; Its fat rich in oleic acid with characteristics similar to olive oil has nourishing properties that promote cholesterol reduction; their proteins contribute to muscle and bone growth and development”, presents SEL.
