Madeira wine market worth 4.6 million in the 2018 first quarter
According to data released by the ‘Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira (DRE)’ – Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira-, “in the first three months of 2018, the Madeira wine’s commercialization was close to 842.8 thousand liters, resulting in first-sale revenues of 4.6 million euros”.
Compared to the same period of 2017, there were increases of 14.6% in quantity and of 7.7% in value.
DRE states that the foreign market continues to be the main consumer of the wine, both for European Union countries and for non-EU countries.
For non-EU countries, the United States of America are one of the best current markets and the sales to the US stood out; nevertheless purchases drop by 18.1%, corresponding to a value of 570 thousand euros.
Japan is the second non-EU country that buy the most Madeira wine according to the DRE. In the first quarter of this year Japan bought 432 thousand euros.
France continues to be the European country that buys the most Madeira wine, although at lower prices. Of the 340 thousand liters sold to the French market, for a value of more than one million euros, these bought at an average cost of three euros.
On the other hand, the most traditional English market bought only 22 thousand liters of Madeira wine, but paid an average of nine euros per liter.
For both European and non-EU markets, the DRE states that there was an “increase year-over-year” while the national market fell “both in quantity (-36.8%) and in value (-5.6%)”.
