Wild Lavender Honey from Serramel won a star at the ‘Great Taste Awards 2020’, the most trusted food and beverage award in the world, which announced its 2020 stars.
Of 12,777 products sent from 106 different countries, Euromel, in Penamacor, was awarded the ‘1 Star Great Taste Awards’ for its Wild Lavender Honey, which means that the judges considered it “a food that offers a fantastic flavor”.
When awarding the prize, the jury wrote: “the color is beautiful, amber and the total absence of any fluctuations, spots or crystals is noticeable. The aroma is delicate and floral, with flower and rose pollen emerging. The taste is also delicately floral, with a slight acidity at the end. There is a distinctive lavender flavor, although not very noticeable in its rich sweetness. A really lovely floral honey, although the powerful sweetness outweighs the more subtle notes”. He also mentioned that the Wild Lavender Honey from Serramel has “an admirable amber tone against the light”.
“The aroma has delicate floral notes and a light background scent of beeswax. The texture characteristics are absolutely perfect and help to perceive the sweet floral flavors of lavender. It is a delicate and pleasant wild lavender honey”, he praised.
Serramel’s origin dates back to 1898, the year in which Jorge de Almeida Lima acquired his first mobile hives and explored them at Quinta do Lameiro, in Lisbon. In 1974, two of Jorge Almeida Lima’s great-grandsons decided to restore the old hives, dedicating themselves body and soul to the beekeeping activity. From Lisbon they moved to Penamacor in Beira Baixa, choosing as Serramel terroir the landscapes of Serra da Malcata, a Natural Reserve with 21 thousand hectares.
