The objectives of Lagos executive are to value wine production, increase the associative spirit and networking in the sector and promote the wine related economy.
The accession of Lagos to the Portuguese Wine Municipalities Association (AMPV) will also allow to establish partnerships “between different economic sectors, namely with tourism”, emphasizes the local executive in a press release.
Maria Joaquina Matos, president of the municipality, recalled the added value of twinning with Torres Vedras, the Portuguese wine capital, highlighting that, although in Lagos there aren’t as many producers as in Torres Vedras, who can take this opportunity to “make an added contribution to the promotion of wine production of the county, will be very welcome”.
Prior to the presentation of the proposal of adhesion to AMPV, the municipal executive met with wine producers based in the municipality of Lagos and registered with the Comissão Vitivinícola do Algarve (Wine Commission of Algarve) with Protected Geographical Indication (Indicação Geográfica Protegida – IGP) wines and Controlled Origin Denomination (Denominação de Origem Controlada – DOC) .
The AMPV currently has 79 associated municipalities, including three in Algarve – Albufeira, Lagoa and Silves -, which is now joined by the municipality of Lagos.
The geographical area corresponding to the “Lagos” DOC covers the municipalities of Aljezur (part of the parishes of Aljezur, Bordeira and Odeceixe), Vila do Bispo (parishes of Raposeira, Sagres and Vila do Bispo and part of the parishes of Barão de São Miguel and Budens) and Lagos (parishes of Luz, Santa Maria and São Sebastião and part of the parishes of Barão de São João, Bensafrim and Odiáxere).
Red and white wines are produced. The reds are characterized as “velvety, slight full-bodied, with fruity aroma and little acid and warm, open of color, presenting a ruby tone that, with the aging, acquires the topaz tone”.
Whites, however, “have a color ranging the citrus and the hay, being delicate and soft with a characteristic trailing of a hot region”.
