The ‘Effervescents du Monde’, held in France and considered the largest competition of sparkling wines in the world, distinguished five Portuguese sparkling wines, from Bairrada to Alentejo, with silver medals. In the 2018 edition, the contest brought together 594 samples from 22 countries, with France and Italy winning 9 places in the ‘top 10’. But Portugal, where sparkling wine account for two percent of wine exports, also attracted some attention, winning a place among the best in the world with 5 silver medals at the event, organized with the aim of enhancing these wines.
The five Portuguese sparkling wines that won the attention of the jury from the Paris contest were:
- ‘Bairrada Doc Marquês de Marialva Cuvée Extra Brut 2012’ and ‘Bairrada Doc Marquês de Marialva Baga Blanc de Noirs Bruto 2015’, both from Adega Cooperativa de Cantanhede;
- ‘Sparkling Mateus Baga and Shiraz Rosé Brut’, from Sogrape;
- ‘Bairrada Doc Quinta do Poço do Lobo Arinto & Chardonnay Bruto’, from Caves de São João;
- ‘Espumante Cartuxa Bruto 2012’, from Fundação Eugénio de Almeida.
The organization of the 2018 edition, the 16th of the competition, highlights “the strong participation” of countries such as Portugal, Argentina, South Africa, Chile, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Hungary, Moldavia, Switzerland. Also worthy of note is the premiere of Canada, Peru and Russia in this competition, organized by the Association Forum Enologie.
