Euromel has just won the 2019 Gold Medal in the 3rd Contest of Confectionery and Honey with Traditional Portuguese Ingredients. The winner is ‘Rosemary Honey with Almonds’.
Euromel also won the Silver Medal in the 2019 National Honey Competition of the Heather Honey category. The silver has gone to the ‘Heather Honey Serras de Portugal’. This contest is an initiative of FNAP – National Federation of Beekeepers of Portugal, with the support of CNEMA – National Exhibition Center.
“Our tasty Mel de Urzes Serras de Portugal is produced by hives in Serra da Malcata and in other mountain ranges in central and northern Portugal. It is a honey of dark color, intense aroma and sweet palate with bitter notes, characteristic of the heather”, presents the board of Euromel, adding that soon this product will start to bear the 2019 Silver Medal.
With family traditions of beekeeping since 1898, it has been producing Serramel honey since 1974. In a habitat in the Serra da Malcata, a natural reserve with 21000 hectares, Euromel bees collect their products in a place of low human activity, where nature is found intact. Jorge Almeida Lima’s great-great grandson – Frederico Horgan – established himself there with a brother, after deciding to recover the old hives that, in 1898, Jorge de Almeida Lima explored in Quinta do Lameiro.
Frederico Horgan, his wife and son, pack, market and export varieties of pure honey and other bee products in larger and more modern facilities. The company includes the entire range, from production of around 30 tons per year, to the purchase of honey from other domestic beekeepers, packaging and marketing. In 2014 is born a new project with the production of Beirabaga sweets and almonds.
