A region of very high-quality
“The region of Lisbon is very solid in its quality and diversity, as shown by the very high level of the wines presented at competition, which essentially reveals a very high degree of demand from the producers and economic agents of Vinhos de Lisboa”, says Bernian Gouvêa, president of CVR Lisboa.
The president of the Confraternity of Oenophiles of Extremadura – Vinhos de Lisboa, José Afonso, also highlighted “the very high quality that, from year to year, is strengthened in the presentation of wines, especially of new producers that present themselves at competition.”
The jury of the competition, composed of 12 elements related to the world of wine, analyzed more than 150 samples from producers and bottlers from the region and awarded the medals according to the characteristics of the wines and the respective conditions of each category.
The Wine Commission of the Lisbon Region (CVR Lisboa) is the entity responsible for the promotion and certification of the wines of that Region.
The ‘Vinhos de Lisboa’ already export around 75% of what they produce, with the main markets being: Nordic countries, Brazil, USA, Benelux, Russia, China and Angola.
The Wine Region of Lisbon includes the following Denominations of Origin: Alenquer, Arruda, Bucelas, Carcavelos, Colares, Encostas d’Aire, Lourinhã, Óbidos and Torres Vedras.
The region has 103 producers and by the end of 2017 produced one million hectoliters of wine per year, corresponding to 40 million bottles, of which 30 million are exported, which gives approximately 5 million boxes per year, which is equivalent to approximately 100 million euros for the Portuguese economy.
The main export destination market is the US, the growing market, as well as the Northern European markets – Sweden and Norway – and Brazil.
