Caves Santa Marta launched in the market a new brand of wines: the ‘Terras de Penaguião’.
The presentation of the new brand of the wine company took place on January 13th in an event that also included the inauguration of the exhibition ‘Terras de Penaguião’.
Caves Santa Marta – a company with five decades of history – is located in the municipality of Santa Marta de Penaguião, in the heart of the Douro region, the oldest wine region in the world.
The wines from Caves Santa Marta are the result of the best vine varieties grown in vineyards in the most privileged areas of the county.
This Douro County – known as ‘Terras de Penaguião’ was one of the first to belong to the first Pombaline delimitation, decreed by royal charter of 1756, for the Feitoria good wines.
Two centuries later, a group of nonconformist viticulturists, unhappy with the state of regional viticulture, founded the Adega Cooperativa de Santa Marta, in 1959.
In the following year, the cooperative wineries of Cumieira and Medrões were also created in the municipality. In the seventies, the three wineries joined together to merge definitively in 1987, giving rise to the well-known Caves Santa Marta.
There were thus met the conditions so that this company could grow and reach a high level in the quality of its wines, what happened.
In 1998, the wine company Caves Santa Marta, was the first cooperative to achieve a vintage, the Vintage Port 1998.
In 2001 it was considered the Best Cooperative Winery of the Year.
