‘Quinta do Portal Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil’ was considered the best olive oil in the Demarcated Douro Region at the 1st Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro Virgin Olive Oil Contest, held in São João da Pesqueira.
There were 75 samples of 52 producers evaluated in four different categories. “Quinta do Portal olive oil was awarded the gold medal in the ‘Light Green Fruity’ category and, because of the consistency of its high individual scores, ended up being considered the best olive oil in the Alto Douro region”, reported the company.
Quinta do Portal’s bet in the field of olive cultivation started in 2017 with two new olive crops: one bordering Quinta do Confradeiro and one in continuous system. These new crops are joined by another olive grove that was already in production. The olive oil is moderately fruity, with essentially mature olives, with notes of green olive leaf, fresh grass and fresh fruits. Slightly bitter and spicy, it has a lingering aftertaste.
With an acidity of 0.14%, Quinta do Portal Extra Virgin Olive Oil is produced from the varieties Madural (40%), Cordovil (30%), Verdeal (20%) and Cobrançosa (10%). In order to produce one liter of olive oil, 8.8 kilograms of olives are required.
Quinta do Portal is a company that since 1990 has been dedicated to the production of high-quality fortified and table wines.
Located in the municipality of Sabrosa, it has developed a policy of internationalization with regular participation in the largest wine fairs, where the quality of its wines and winery have been awarded.
Wine tourism is another investment of the Estate, with a hotel unit of Casa das Pipas and the already famous wine cellar designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.
