SIAZ – Olive Oil and Table Olive Information System – estimates that in the 2017-2018 marketing year, the volume of national olive oil production is between 125 and 130 thousand tons
The Office of Planning, Policy and General Administration (GPP) of the Ministry of Agriculture estimates that in the 2017-2018 marketing year, the volume of olive oil production is between 125 and 130 thousand tons and that the volume of olive production for canning is 25 thousand tons, as stated in a press release.
The figures are based on SIAZ, which aims to provide information on the olive sector, produced by both GPP and other entities. SIAZ carried out a survey in olive oil mills that covered a sample of 141 mills, which occurred in the last marketing years.
The results presented refer to 137 mills that responded to the survey. Thus, SIAZ estimates that in the 2017-2018 marketing year, the volume of national olive oil production is between 125 and 130 thousand tons.
In order to achieve this volume of production, several factors contributed to this result, including the year 2017, which was a “good harvest year”, “the meteorological drought, which continued throughout the entire cycle of vegetative development of the olive groves, reduced drastically the occurrence of pests and phytosanitary problems” and the dryland olive grove is “well adapted to water scarcity.”
